[15:56] – At what time did you realise that the internet has become a global sensation?

  • The ARPANET was a tremendously successful experiment in packet switching.
  • It was intended to link a dozen universities together to share their computing resources. 
  • It also aimed to accelerate the rate at which artificial intelligence and computer science research can be undertaken. 
  • It taught us that the computer communication idea was very powerful allowing people to work with each other across multiple time zones. 

[27:08] – What led you to open the internet for the public?

  • It was the logical progression, from the experience of the ARPANET and the Internet.
  • Tim Berners Lee announced the World Wide Web in 1991. 
  • Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina designed Mosaic, a graphical browser. 
  • That led to an explosion of world wide web applications. 

[40:14] – Do you agree that digital has a net positive impact on the world?

  • This is a decade of computational X for almost all values of x, whether it’s linguistics and astrophysics, or physics or chemistry.
  • We are seeing people getting Nobel Prizes using computer technology in order to make discoveries. 
  • Whether it will effectively help us solve the sustainability problem and solve the climate change problem is an open question. 
  • But the tool helps us model what’s going on and the extent to which our models accurately reflect how the real world is working.
  • It helps us gain insight into figuring out what we should do in order to mediate or mitigate the effects of global warming. 

[50:43] – What is your advice to young people?

  • Don’t try to plan your career. Just be alert of opportunity.
  • Recognizing that humility is your friend and asking questions to learn more, turning to people who know more than you do to get good answers is a valuable exercise.
