[00:33] – About Jade Miller

  • Jade is a visual communication practitioner.
  • She has worked in communications and marketing for nearly 20 years, across a variety of sectors.

[01:56] – How do you define visual communication? Why is it a critical skill today?

  • It is thinking about the way that you communicate visually first.
  • That doesn’t necessarily include talking, but if you’re thinking visually, that covers off some of your writing, and also creating visuals.
  • Visual communication encompasses the written form.

[08:39] – What are some mistakes or misconceptions people have about visual communication? How should these be addressed?

  • The first is that people don’t think that they are creative.
  • They think that they cannot think about what visuals to create themselves or get somebody else to create.
  • The people just need to switch this part of their brain on again.
  • As kids, we’re creating visual material all the time; we’re scribbling, drawing and painting.
  • We’re very creative as young children and somewhere along the way that gets lost, and it goes dormant.

[16:01] – What are the key principles that guide your approach to design or to visual communication?

  • The first is simplification. With so much going on in our lives, bringing things down to what are the key things that we need to communicate.
  • The second principle is mindful empathy.
  • Being mindful of communicating visually, is being mindful of other humans and being empathetic towards other humans.
  • Last but not the least is having fun, and creating something that is interesting and outside the box.
