- It’s fascinating to discover that our city has experienced a continuous pattern of shifting from downtown to Uptown throughout its history.
- This movement was influenced by various factors, including the yellow fever epidemic that occurred in the late 18th century.
- To escape the congestion and health risks associated with the lower part of Manhattan, people decided to relocate. They found solace in what is now Greenwich Village, which was initially a separate village in itself.
- It offered advantages such as refreshing river breezes and more spacious surroundings between homes and businesses.
- As a result, Greenwich Village emerged, and Bank Street, along with other businesses and banks, moved uptown to better serve its clientele.
