[05:04] – How do you decide on when one of your patients needs an interventional procedure versus the more traditional approach?

  • The decision-making process involves weighing the risks and benefits while considering alternatives.
  • In resource-limited countries like India, our approach may differ due to factors such as the prevalence of conditions like tuberculosis.
  • We generally prioritize non-invasive approaches first and then turn to Interventional procedures if they offer the best outcome for the patient.

[07:00] – What is palliative care? How can you clarify the broader role of palliative medicine?

  • Palliative Medicine is a field that aims to provide relief from health-related suffering for patients facing life-limiting illnesses.
  • Contrary to a common misconception, it goes beyond end-of-life care.
  • It addresses physical, mental, psychological, spiritual, and financial aspects of distress throughout a patient’s journey, from diagnosis to bereavement for the family.

[14:17] – How do you balance the technical aspect of your job with the emotional and psychological demands?

  • Palliative Medicine can take an emotional toll, given the deep involvement with patients and families.
  • Building a wall of detachment is not a viable solution.
  • Acknowledging one’s humanity, recognizing signs of burnout, and creating a supportive community is essential.
  • Self-care, whether through family, hobbies, or health, is crucial to maintain a balance.
