Gender and human rights issues prevail in several parts of the world. Africa, still grappling with numerous challenges due to its history, faces significant problems related to gender, such as inequality and gender-based violence. While various national and international organizations are dedicated to addressing these issues, there is still a long way to go. In today’s episode, we delve into the role played by the African Union’s Federation of International Gender and Human Rights in tackling these challenges.

[04:30] – Tell me a little bit about the role of the FIGHR. What is your role as mission ambassador?

  • As a Mission Ambassador, I’m responsible for representing their organization at the African Union and promoting the organization’s objectives mission and vision.
  • My role as a Mission Ambassador is to engage with key stakeholders at the African Union including policymakers, different government officials, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations. 
  • We do this to advocate for policies and practices that protect and promote gender and human rights.
  • The other work that we do is to advocate for policy change, where I work to promote policy change at the African Union that advances gender and human rights. 
  • I also work to raise awareness about gender and human rights issues across the continent through various outreach activities including public speaking like we’re doing now media interviews and social media campaigns. 
  • I cannot operate efficiently and effectively without building stronger synergies within my space, so as a Mission Ambassador to the African Union, I work on building partnerships with other organizations and stakeholders to advance gender and human rights. 

[06:57] -What are the key gender and human rights challenges in African Union countries?

  • Gender-based violence is pervasive across Africa, affecting individuals of all genders through forms such as rape, sexual harassment, intimate partner violence, and female genital mutilation.
  • Another issue is the underrepresentation of women in political leadership positions, hindering their ability to participate in decision-making processes and advocate for their rights.
  • Economic empowerment is also a challenge, with women and girls facing barriers such as limited access to education, workplace discrimination, and restricted financial resources.
  • Child marriage remains a significant concern throughout Africa.
