Overview

Sustainability, Inclusion, and Diversity, are three words that go together as a trinity. It is hard to define. If we look at it, we can see that diversity comes from the word “diverse” which is “different in nature or kind”. So, inclusion is about bringing or keeping people together. Sustainability, on the other hand, is the ability to sustain. To be sustainable, we need to be able to sustain. So, what does all this mean? What does this have to do with business and HR? In this episode, Katy Murray, Author, Change Makers; Leadership coach, and Diversity, and Inclusion consultant explains these words in length.

00:58- About the book

  • I saw some data recently that 42% of women have experienced burnout in the last 12 months.
  • The number has gone up significantly since the pandemic.
  • I’ve coached many leaders over the years and seen the impact of overwhelm and burnout in our lives.
  • When we’re passionate, we’re ambitious, and we want to make a difference in the world, but how do we care for ourselves so that we also can be sustainable.
  • What are the workplace barriers that I’m going to navigate?
  • How can I disrupt that and create a more equitable society around me, so it’s the inner work and the outer work that I wanted to pull together in the book?

02:48- Powerful habits that will reshape the brain and shift behavior

  • We create our own lives through the daily habits and the daily things that we do, and we create our lives in patterns.
  • I talk about power practices in the book and in my work, which are minimal ways to build healthy habits in our day-to-day.
  • These things do reshape our brain, they reshape our neuropsychology, and they also reshape our biology to an extent and the way that we think about ourselves.

09:14- What got you interested in supporting a cause like diversity and inclusion?

  • I needed to work with different cultures and understand people from lots of different perspectives.
  • It really grew me and stretched me to realize there isn’t always one story. There are multiple stories and there isn’t always one way of doing things, there are multiple perspectives and multiple voices.
  • Businesses, organizations, and teams are going to thrive when we’re able to really tap into all the diverse perspectives that we can.

20:41- How are millennials and gen z’s changing diversity and inclusion in the workplace?

  • This generation actually has less of the boxes and the labels.
  • There is an acceptance of difference and an acceptance of fluidity and choice.
  • There is increased uncertainty and volatility and complexity in the world that they are having to navigate as leaders.
