Overview

Leadership is one of the most essential qualities anybody can develop, and it is mighty when you have somebody you can look up to in times of uncertainty. In times like these where the future seems very uncertain, we need people who can be courageous enough to lead other people. Today we have with us Steve to tell us about what he thinks a good leader is.

04:54- What makes a good leader?

  • Most people talk about leaders the way they talk about their boss or manager or basically somebody who is in command.
  • For me, leadership is about human and human engagement and emotional relationships which connect the leader and the follower.
  • Leadership is a performative art as if you were in the audience and affected by someone else’s engagement

10:29- What characteristics make a good leader in times of uncertainty?

  • In the US military, we have the idea of VUCA which stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.
  • In times of uncertainty like the pandemic, the flock looks toward the leader to provide some comfort for them.
  • They have to stand firmly on their ground and face the uncertainty with courage and not let their flock break.

20:27- Can a strong leader show vulnerability?

  • I think they can and they should. A leader should be open to the fact that they can sometimes be wrong.
  • A commander is different. We look up to the commander for direction when we are stressed.
  • A leader is not a commander. A leader has to make the followers feel connected to him so that their engagement is fulfilling
