Overview

We are often faced with dilemmas in life, especially when it comes to our career-related choices. The daily inner fights of how to deal with a situation? The tracking if we are on the right path or not? We often need an ear to either listen to our dilemmas or a person who can open our perceptions, enabling us to make better decisions.

Thus, lies the importance of executive coaching. In today’s discussion with Mr. Jaykumar Hariharan, we discuss how coaching enables us to become better leaders.

[00:35] – About Jaykumar Hariharan

  • Jay is the CEO and Chief Coach at Blue Fire Coaching Consultant.
  • He is also an author and a speaker. He has written a book titled, “Rewire – How To Be The Leader Of Your Own Life.”
  • He calls it a letter of love to leaders of his generation.
  • Having a great love for life, Jaykumar is a certified deep sea diver and a certified paraglider too.

[01:00] – What made you become a coach?

  • I was successful, but some things were missing internally. I was not becoming the leader, I thought I would set out to be.
  • I didn’t really have anyone to talk to discuss these dilemmas.
  • I realized the best of solving a problem is by scratching your own itch.
  • Freedom is my topmost value. I want to have freedom with what I want to do with my time, energy, and passion. My corporate career was not going to be able to afford that.
  • I decided to take a plunge and knew that coaching would never go down as it deals with the ever-lasting challenges of life.

[05:50] – Why do you focus only on CEOs?

  • It is not an intentional choice. The kind of challenges that come to the coaching table are highly nuanced, that needs to be addressed with people who have reached a certain level in an organization.
  • It is my fond wish that I could influence organizations to change, and it is relatively easier if change starts at the bottom

[07:32] – What is the difference that you perceive between coaching older leaders and younger leaders?

  • With younger leaders, self-awareness is very important.
  • For older leaders, it is the process of unlearning
  • However, I wish the process of putting in the work gets its place in the growth journey and is not just wished away.
  • Shahrukh Khan has said, “There is no glory in being a starving artist.” Be an artist, but a well-paid one.

[10:34] – How can a coach benefit an entrepreneur or a professional?

  • In a world where everyone wants their story to be told, who is listening? Whoever is listening, do they come with their bias?
  • The third person’s observation is healthy. It is therapeutic. Being heard using their services as a sounding board, having an accountability partner, and someone who is a witness to your magnificence are the reasons for the need for coaching.
