Overview

In the current environment, where organizations are looking for multi-talented people, where it is no longer just about the work skills, but one’s overall personality, the importance of personal branding rises.

But it is essential to understand that building a personal brand is equally a process like building a company’s brand. It needs dedicated time and effort. Today we have with us, Rosie Chong, a personal branding expert who takes us through the nutty gritty of building one’s brand.

[00:38] – About Rosie Chong

  • Rosie is a social media strategist, a personal branding expert, a mental health advocate, and a podcast host.
  • Rosie co-hosts a podcast called, “It’s a Definite Maybe”. It started out as a platform for two women to discuss issues like the pressure of being in the 20s. The podcast covers wide-ranging topics like work, relationships, dealing with mental health etc.

[00:57] – What is personal branding?

  • It has two different factors. There is a personal brand, which is the way that people see you.
  • It is often intentional, and done mostly through content and social media.
  • People feel it to be a concept for famous, rich people like entrepreneurs and celebrities. But it is for everyone who has goals to accomplish. How big or small the goal is not important to build one’s brand.

[03:02] – What are some of the factors to be taken into consideration when you start thinking of a personal brand?

  • The most important one is to know what you want out of it. A lot of people think it is about becoming famous, but it is way beyond that.
  • The next step is to analyze how to get to your goal.

[05:52] – How does one determine one’s passion and area to invest in?

  • Think if you can speak about a particular topic for a year. If the instant answer is a no, you have your answer.
  • The easiest way to find your area of interest is to find a topic you can always ramble on.
  • It doesn’t necessarily have to be a topic of profession.
  • Do not think it is about putting out the right content in the first go. Building a personal brand is a process that takes its own sweet time.
  • I started using LinkedIn as a medium to get more clients, but eventually decided to use it for me and not just work. I started sharing behind the scenes of content creation, my ways of dealing with anxiety and mental health in general.
  • I used to be ashamed for having to take therapy for mental health until I started talking about it on LinkedIn

[13:06] – How does one handle the conflict of a personal brand with the brand of the company?

  • Your personal brand defines you, and it will be with you till your last day.
  • The job that you work in or the company you work for is temporary.
  • It is important to have an honest conversation with yourself to build your personal brand, however, one needs to be mindful that one is an extension of the company’s brand too.
