  • It was a self-proclaimed title that I just came up with. 
  • It is a demonstration of the kind of work that I do. 

[06:58] – What is your understanding of strategy when you talk about it in reference to the corporate?

  • My friend defines strategy as what winning looks like, and how are we going to win.
  • I’m a strategist about a single point of strategy which is differentiation, but you are a multi-faceted strategist. 

[08:39] – How does a startup develop a strategy that will differentiate it from others?

  • When you’re differentiating something, there are multiple ways with which to approach differentiation. 
  • From your heritage or your backstory or an attribute of the product, there are all kinds of different ideas floating out there. 
  • For instance, if you have a product that’s a hard good like a car, you are more likely to want to differentiate around an ephemeral idea. If mine is 500 horsepower and yours is 600 horsepower, you win.
  • You want to decouple from the everyday attributes of your product and be more about an idea or a vision. 
  • There are all kinds of strategies, both from how you approach the point of differentiation, but also kind of meta strategies on how you think about the entire thing.
