Emotional and psychological trauma is the result of extraordinarily stressful events that shatter your sense of security, making you feel helpless in a dangerous world. Psychological trauma can leave you struggling with upsetting emotions, memories, and anxiety that won’t go away. It can also leave you feeling numb, disconnected, and unable to trust other people. When bad things happen, it can take a while to get over the pain and feel safe again. 01:16- About her journey
- I grew up in a very abusive family, as a child, and through my teens.
- I spent my childhood and teens just trying to figure out how to stay alive and trying to figure out what am I going to do with all this because I don’t want to be here, I want to keep living, I always knew I wanted to grow up and be an adult.
- I took a psychology class and thought, this is where I need to go.
- I started working in the eating disorder and trauma field as soon as I graduated with my master’s in social work.
02:49- About Thriving After Trauma: Stories of Living and Healing
- I wanted to write the book because I’ve been working with people who have experienced many types of traumas, abuse, and assault, but also people who’ve been through war, people who’ve lost their homes in fires, and lost family members suddenly. So, this is a compilation of different clients I’ve worked with through the years.
- We all including myself, have managed to find ways to talk about what happened to us, and figure out how to place all those feelings so that we can be in the present.
- When I think of the word thriving after trauma, it’s about learning how to live with things that happened to us not get over it, but learning how to integrate and reframe and use our experiences to continue to heal ourselves and others.
05:28- What goes into moving from “Surviving After Trauma” to “Thriving After Trauma”?
- The key is owning it, facing it, and speaking it.
- Many of us spend years trying to avoid the truth.
- We spend years trying to distract ourselves from the grieving process.
- in order to move into a life of thriving, we need to be able to figure out how to speak about it, express our feelings, and better understand what it means to us.
- The key is to find a purpose in our traumas, find ways to reframe them, and figure out how can I use this awful loss to continue to move ahead and live and also stay connected to other people.

- I started doing this podcast a couple of years ago with my co-host Judge Rosemarie Aquilina.
- she was the judge leading the case against Olympic doctor, Larry Nassar, who was accused and found guilty of abusing hundreds of athletes and gymnasts.

- I reached out to her, and we decided maybe we should do a podcast.
