Overview
With the trend of freelancing and gig economy on the rise, along with the predictions of recession, there are talks about strengthening the connection to ensure stability in financial flow. But are connections always made in times of need, or should they be fostered even without any vested motives? Today, we discuss the importance of networking along with the environment that millennials and GenZs look for in an organisation.
[00:33] – About Chris Tuff
- Chris is the national best-selling author of two books, “The Millennial Whisperer” and “Save Your Asks”.
- He is also a keynote speaker.
- He has worked directly with Mark Zuckerberg.
[04:04] – Tell me about your book “Save Your Asks”.
- The two main skills that I try to bring in myself and my daughters are resilience and tenacity. My other two-hour rule is that if something is not going your way, you can dwell on it, but then you need to bounce back.
- When the pandemic hit, I was supposed to be at Nike headquarters, but the whole thing went off.
- I was thinking of how to bounce back. Then I realised, I am unsure of how long the pandemic would last, so I took an opportunity to work on my book.
- One book I always wanted to write was on how to better network and sell.
- We can approach any interaction with desired outcome just being authentic vs. reciprocity.
- I always get asked on how I network so effectively.
[09:23] – How does one network better?
- Creating relationships is easy, it is sustaining them that is difficult.
- One of the five tactics I talk about a lot is the idea of shawshanking.
- Take this concept to one of your prospects and think about someone you have fallen out of touch with. Send them a video text message telling them that you are thinking about them.
- Human connection comes through the video so much more profound than just words.
[15:30] – Share some myths about the millennials and how were these debunked?
- The biggest myth is that they are needy, and that comes down to how they were parented. When they come to organisations, nor only are they needy for recognition, but also have the influence of social media. Anytime they want instant gratification, they post it on social media to get it.
- But it is also on us to be not just their boss, but also to be a mentor and coach to them. They want tot feel like their leaders are taking a vested interest in their lies and developing them.
- There are thee characteristics that millennials or GenZs are looking for in leadership, and those are inspirational, autonomy and transparency.
- On organisational level, it is about increasing our understanding of what work flexibility means.
