Aniisu is a global communication leader.  He’s a personal branding advocate.  He is a speaker and the author of a book titled  Internal Communications – Insights, Practices, and Models. He was awarded by the PR Council of India as one of their hall of fame winners.

[01:10] Career Background

I started my career in advertising. And then I discovered my passion,  overtime in employee communications, or something called internal communications. Everyone was focused on external communications, where there was more money.

[02:12] What are some common errors people make in interpersonal communication?

When I talk about my work, it’s more related to communicating with audiences internally and externally. Interpersonal communication is also relevant in the workplace. The primary mistake people make is they try to listen from their perspective,  they don’t listen to understand, and they don’t listen from the other person’s context.

[03:16] How is external communication different from internal communication?

Internal communication is focused primarily on employees as ambassadors and advocates of the brand. It is about helping them be connected to the company’s purpose and helping them understand the vision of the company. The external part is more about making the brand and reputation stronger.

[07:24] How do you manage a crisis?

People tend to react when a crisis hits. But often organizations who are ahead of the game are the ones who have very strong business continuity practices, and risk mitigation practices in place. So then it’s not any more of a surprise.

[10:28] What is personal branding?

People think that personal branding is about yourself.  And it is about promoting yourself and marketing yourself, I think that’s the wrong interpretation. I look at it as an inside-out approach to presenting your authentic self and in the process of helping someone else become better,  or helping someone else become successful. And that’s the only way you can build your personal brand.

[12:12] How important is it for people to make an investment in their personal brand?

Most people think that personal branding happens only when you are at a very late age in your career. But that’s not true. It’s about living it day in and day out. Because you as a person are carrying your personal brand. People tend to equate personal branding to social media, which is, again, not true because your personal brand gets built offline.

  • Have a clear purpose and stick to it.
  • Be committed and consistent.
  • Be authentic.
