Overview
Choosing the best course for a degree and the importance of taking up regular professional courses to upskill oneself is often stressed upon as a way to grow in one’s career. What is typically not spoken about is the importance of soft skills needed to grow professionally. The mannerisms of dealing with clients, customers, leaders, employees, and stakeholders. The communication skills needed to strike a connection are typically paid less attention in front of the hard skills. In today’s episode, we focus on the critical importance of soft skills and how to go about cultivating the same.
[00:30] – About Suman Kher
- Suman is the Chief Executive Officer of Soft Skills Studio.
- She is a communication coach, helping professionals to accelerate their career growth.
[01:38] – How do you define soft skills? How do these differ from if there is a term called ‘hard skills?’
- Hard skills refer to all the technical information you have.
- Soft skills are called “soft” because they can be moulded based on the situation you find yourself in.
- Research shows that soft skills are increasingly becoming more important as we work in diverse work environments.
- There are multiple generations working at the same time, so the skill of communicating with different kinds of people using your emotional intelligence to figure out whether you should be technical with someone, should you be assertive with someone, etc. is all about soft skills.
- Being able to gauge a situation and using the communication skills that you have accordingly.
[02:45] – What are some common soft skills that employers look for when they are looking for candidates?
- Research shows that it is communication which is at the top because even when you’re applying for a job, starting with your cover letter which goes first and then probably you get invited to the interview, communication skills are still right at the top of it.
- Being tech-savvy is another requirement as these tools help in navigating hybrid work models.
- The third is change management. We have lived through some unprecedented change through the pandemic and there are so many aspects of life which I feel have completely transformed from the way we learn, we consume content, the way we socialise, the way we entertain ourselves.
