Overview
It is one of the core motives of any business to increase the shareholder’s wealth which creates a lot of negative impacts on the environment and a lot of inequalities. There is no fundamental set of rules the companies can follow to become more responsible which makes it harder for them to consider the impact of their decisions on the environment. Today we talk to Prerna to understand what ESG is and how companies incorporate it to become better.
00:30- About Prerna Wadikar
- Prerna Wadikar is an ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Expert.
- She is the First Indian board member of the Central British Fund for World Jewish Relief.
- Prerna is the Founder of Oxford India Business Conclave.
- She has pioneered institutional ESG (Environmental Social & Governance) education in India.
- She has been recognized, awarded, and felicitated several times.
04:18- How do you define Environment, Social, and Governance or ESG?
- This was formed by the financial individuals largely to assist them in making their decisions by keeping in mind the consequences of their decisions on the environment.
- I like to call them the emoji characters of the financial world because most of the impact of the environment is not quantifiable.
- IFC defines it as a set of environmental, social, and governance considerations that companies should keep in mind for their operations.
09:01 – How do you train the corporate world on ESG?
- The first thing that most of them want to understand is what ESG really is because that in itself is a very vague word in the industry at the moment.
- The second thing they want to understand is how it impacts their business because something which is vague in its very own definition is hard to imply its impact on other things.
- The third and probably the most critical thing is that they want to know where to begin and what to do. They think about whether they should be bothered by their ESG ratings at all or what they can do to improve them.
12:19 – Why is ESG so important for financial markets?
- I think it has always been the most basic rule of any business to increase shareholder wealth which has led to a lot of environmental disturbance and inequality also.
- ESG tries to include stakeholder value creation into the business and not just shareholders’ wealth creation.
- It helps the investors and the companies take a more holistic approach to their decision-making if they have properly incorporated ESG into their business by making them consider the environmental risks that they would have ignored otherwise.
