10:39- How easy or difficult is it to implement an exit strategy in the ASEAN frontier?

  • We have exited everything in our first fund. We have seen acquisitions by strategic partners, sales to financial buyers, and even entrepreneurs buying us out.
  • The markets in Frontier ASEAN have some size and growth now where there is room for financial buyers to come in, acquire an asset from us, and then grow it.
  • One exit route that hasn’t happened much yet but that we think will come is listings.

21:29- What advice would you give to new investors looking to enter ASEAN private equity?

  • The easiest answer is to tell prospective investors to come and visit Frontier ASEAN. Just like I originally visited and got hooked, visitors can see the inevitability of this market.
  • People have misperceptions of what it’s like to do business here, perhaps from old movies and stories.
  • When we’ve managed to get prospective investors to visit frontier markets like Frontier ASEAN, the conversations have been very different afterwards.
