About Mr. Sarajit Jha

  • He has done his MBA from Xavier Institute of Management.
  • He was also featured as the 25 Hottest Executives under 40 in Business Today 2014.

02:07 – How do you persuade leaders to transform?

  • You cannot really persuade leaders to transform because most of the leaders are self-persuaded. By definition, if somebody is not interested in changing then they are probably not a leader.
  • There should be enough stimulus to transform because change is hard, and it takes a lot of effort.
  • What you do is, you break the whole process into steps that can be followed without overwhelming resistance.

05:11 – What have typically been some of your challenges and learnings while going through a process of transformation?

  • I believe there are maybe three rules of classification. One is that transformation is very hard.
  • Then I believe there is irony in transformation. People generally want transformational changes in others but won’t even make transactional changes in themselves.
  • The other is that in order to be a coach for someone to inspire proper transformation in others, we need to be able to show them a mirror so that they can do what is best for them and not inflict our personalities on them.

13:43 – Tell me about some unique digital initiatives that you are taking at Tata Steel.

  • One of the aspects we are working on is to try to help our employees to work remotely as much as possible.
  • Another thing we are working on is trying to work towards excellence at every touchpoint. Whether it’s our customers getting in touch with us or our employees, are they experiencing excellence or not?
  • And then, am I able to scale and predict this consistently?

16:27 – What in your opinion have been some opportunities the pandemic has thrown up for the digital economy?

  • One of the major things it has done is that it has proved that it is possible for employees to work from anywhere, and they need not necessarily come to the offices.
  • It has also redefined the worker in a way that has shown us that the worker can be a human or AI or a cobot.
  • It has also redefined the nature of the work. A lot of work that was happening in the physical world can happen digitally such as payments, ordering from smartphones, or even visiting certain places by creating them in the metaverse.
