Overview

Have you ever heard of the Ironman Triathlon? Today’s guest is Ironman.

An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.2 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.2 km) run completed in that order, a total of 140.6 miles (226.3 km). It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world.

In this episode, we have Hetal Sonpal who talks about entrepreneurs. He talks about coaching and the ironman triathlon. He also talks about his book titled Against All Odds in which he talks about how his book is an accidental journey.

05:27- What are some of the basic mistakes a lot of startup entrepreneurs make?

  • Ideas don’t get funding, execution does.
  • You are not your customer. You need to touch and feel and embrace your end customer multiple times.
  • Think deep down about the product. It should be consumer fit.
  • It’s an extremely lonely journey.
  • Be ready for failures.

12:13- What are some of the unique perspectives that you bring to a coaching relationship?

  • I deeply emphasize honesty and straightforwardness.
  • I try to focus on the basics, focus on the numbers, and try and ensure that you’re writing everything down.
  • I tell them to give me a complete deck, only then I’ll have a conversation.
  • I’m here to make a meaningful difference and make it fast.

14:07- What are some of the areas that you think the young leaders need to be coached in?

  • The first one is time management.
  • The second is patience. We tend to give ourselves much less time than we should.
  • The third one is teamwork. The biggest learning for a leader is giving up responsibility and ownership.
  • The fourth thing is, to get the right people. Spend a disproportionate amount of time on hiring, and getting the right people.
  • Once you get your right team in place, whether good times or bad the team will deliver.
  • If you get the wrong team, even in the best of times, you would not be able to succeed.

22:51- What would you say are three lessons you want our viewers and listeners to take away from your journey and our conversation?

  • Never give up.
  • Life is continuous learning and be humble and nice to everyone.
  • The world is full of good people just ignore the bad.
