Football is probably the most loved game in the world but India has not done very well in it. Cricket has been the dominant sport in India due to which other sports are typically overlooked and even discouraged. We have to learn what goes right in the sport of cricket and try to implement those things in other sports to grow them in our country. Today we talk to Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran about the roadmap of Indian Football and where it stands globally right now.

05:07 – What is the role of AIFF vs The State Federations?

  • AIFF was established in 1937, and it has 36 members consisting of our states and union territories. There is an executive board that consists of 23 members including eminent players as per the latest guidelines issued by the Supreme Court.
  • We have to govern the sport in the country to the best of our capacity. The priorities in terms of growing the sport have been different until now, but we have a complete plan as of now to build our capacity as a team.
  • At the end, players are going to come from various parts of the country and not just the top cities. So, we have to build the right kind of infrastructure to promote the opportunities available in every part of the country.

14:46 – Is the private sector getting involved in football?

  • Indian cricket has almost unlimited money and most of its money comes from broadcasting and sponsorship deals.
  • We can see that in the IPL money has been coming at an increasing pace for the last 20 years. More and more big brands want to advertise their brand on the platform because of its huge viewership.
  • We have to learn from cricket that viewership is necessary to bring in good money for the sport. Brands have started taking an interest in football also as its audience is increasing year by year.

19:40 – Can you see India becoming an attraction for international players?

  • We have already seen some high-profile stars who have retired to play in the India Super League, but they come at the very end of their career. 
  • Going forward, we need to see these stars play at their peak stages in their careers if we really want to grow our viewership, but for that, we need to make our leagues much more competitive than it already is.
  • We are on the right track because we are trying to add value to the players which are very necessary if we want to make Indian football an attraction for global players.
