Overview

With the changing business environment, the retirement age is increasing. But people in their 60s are usually treated as not viable for employers. In today’s episode, we discuss how to pivot setbacks to success and how can boomers train to retain their value even beyond the 60s.

[00:37] – About John Tarnoff

[03:48] – What made you become a coach?

  • During my stint with DreamWorks Animation, I was fascinated with the education world and the world of training, as all departments had to be built from scratch.
  • When the company changed direction owing to the recession, I decided to do consulting at the intersection of the entertainment industry, technology, and education.
  • I ended up co-running a graduate program for a university in entertainment management and then began to work with talent development with my graduation students
  • In one of the TEDx talks, I spoke about rekindling self-confidence among boomers, so they are considered viable workers even in their 60s.

[09:46] – Help me understand, “how you learned to turn setbacks into success in a volatile business”.

  • In my entertainment career, I was fired 39% of the time. We are taught that getting fired is shameful.
  • The entertainment business is very volatile, as you try to second-guess the taste of the mass audience, which is constantly changing.
  • I had to learn how to pivot from these setbacks.
  • One has to be always on toes and realize the is maybe another way of salvaging the situation or pivoting into something amazing.

[18:50] – Tell me your hypothesis when you wrote this book.

  • I wrote this book to counter the discouragement that many people feel from having worked in corporate jobs for 20, 30, or 40 years.
  • They think that I either don’t want to retire or can’t afford to retire.
  • I want to tell people that the solution to the problem is already inside them.
  • You have the confidence, experience, and insight. You just need a little activation.
