Overview

We live in ever changing times. Any kind of change always brings disruptions and challenges with it. It is critical for leaders to lead in an exceptional manner when navigating planned or unplanned changes. The quality of grace under times of pressure is critical for a successful organisation and its power of adapting to the changes. In today’s discussion, we talk about the importance of grace in leadership, particularly during challenging and high-pressure situations.

[00:40] – About John Baldoni

  • John is an author of a book titled, “Grace Under Pressure.”
  • He is a master corporate executive coach.
  • John is an author of 16 books and a sought after communications consultant.
  •  He has been recognized by the International Federation of Learning and Development as a world-class mentor.

[01:13] –  Can you give a brief overview of your book, “Grace Under Pressure?” What inspired you to write it?

  • I believe in grace as a healing power for us.
  • It is a catalyst for the greater good.
  • The book is about how leaders keep it together when times are stressful.
  • There are three things that leaders do. The first is taking care of their people.
  • The second is taking care of themselves and the third is building for the future.
  • The twist is that you have to do all of this with a sense of grace.
  • It means to showcase courage, commitment, compassion, making people feel welcome, embracing new and different ideas, bringing people together and building a sense of community.

[03:19] – Why do you think “Grace” is such an important quality?

  • It is counter-intuitive to the way management is run. Management is about administration and getting things on time which is absolutely critical to every organisation.
  • When we work for organisations which are poorly managed, nothing gets done.
  • Grace is about looking beyond, about looking at individuals as contributors. It is that leveller and we take it down a level in stressful times.
  • Even when we’re not in a crisis, we’re always going through periods of change and as changes are disruptive, it’s up to the leader to point the way but do it in a way that brings people along.
