Overview
Your organization’s culture determines its personality and character. It is what distinguishes your company from others and is made up of all of its interactions, behaviors, attitudes, and ideals. Performance is influenced by workplace culture, which influences engagement, enjoyment, and satisfaction.
In today’s episode of The Brand Called You, Annicken R Day talks about culture and strategy. And she also goes into depth about culture and how organizations need to build culture or can really start to build culture. She also talks about your book Fly Butterfly.
[00:22] – About Annicken R Day.
- Annicken is an author and entrepreneur, she’s a culture strategist.
- She’s the chief happiness officer.
- She is the founder of Corporate Spring and Happy Life, Happy Work.
- And she’s an author of a book titled Fly Butterflies.
07:22- How do you define culture?
- It’s how people behave, it’s the choices they make, the way they prioritize the company or team, it’s the way you collaborate, how you speak to each other, how you solve problems.
- It’s all of that because culture is basically behaviors and habits that are put in the system consciously or subconsciously.
- It always starts with what you truly believe in. And that kind of mirrors into the way you actually show up.
- Because culture can happen by chance, which is what it happens in most companies honestly. Or you can build it deliberately.
12:09- How does a young company start to build culture?
- They have a huge advantage because they can actually build it from scratch, instead of repairing old mistakes or things that don’t work.
- And that’s a big shift that needs to change. That’s why I love working with startups because then you can start from the beginning.
- So we had an exercise where they actually defined their company values when they were three people. And then they decided to hire people who share those values.
- And they also define their purpose and hire people who would love them and be part of this purpose.
- And then they kind of grew it from there. And it works so well because then you have this in mind from the beginning.
13:43- What comes first for company, culture, or strategy?
- Make culture your strategy. That’s the best thing.
- So that whole notion about culture being separate from strategy, I don’t buy into that at all.
- If one has to choose, culture cannot be ignored.
- A strategy that will have to change all the time because of the changing demands of the world.
