Asians find Australia one of the top choices when considering their options to migrate for reasons related to studies or careers. They often work there for years and settle for the perks that the Australian government offers them. But what happens to the social issues that impact the Asian Australian Community? Today, we discuss the work that, “the Asian Australian Alliance” does for the community.
[00:32] – About Erin Wen Ai Chew
- Erin is the Co-Founder and National Convener for The Asian Australian Alliance.
- Erin is a social activist, freelance writer, entrepreneur, and thought leader who has dedicated her last 10 years to address social issues impacting the Asian Australian Community.

[04:47] – How do you define the term, “Asian”?
- The first point is if you identify as an Asian. It doesn’t matter whether you are 10%, 50%, or fully Asian.
- The actual definitions are stipulated in the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which states the different things that Asia is about.
- The generic categories are East Asian, South Asian, South East Asian, Central Asian, and Western Asian.
[10:40] – Are these challenges because of the diverse Asian Australian Community?
- Asian Australian Community is diverse as we came in all different ways like education, business, and conflict.
- The prime reason for the challenges is that it is still a very white-centric society. If you look different and not like the majority, you are considered a perpetual foreigner.
- Even if the Asian Australian community is growing, we are not readily seen.
- Another thing, considered largely good but holds back Asians, is the model minority. The community is grateful to Australia for providing them with opportunities and good life. So, they don’t voice up when issues arise.
- The idea then is to keep your head down and do your thing. It is considered they are comfortable with the government for the benefits, doesn’t matter which government it is.
- So, when Asians do speak up, they get targeted very easily.
