01:25- Born and raised

  • Fabian was born and raised in Australia, but her parents were immigrants.
  • Fabian’s mother came from the British Raj, whose father was UK foreign affairs advisor to Haile Selassie, the last Emperor of Ethiopia.
  • Fabian’s father came from an orthodox Jewish family, and his great-grandfather had been the last chief rabbi of Moscow.
  • Fabian’s parents met in Italy, and soon they hitchhiked over to Australia, which was where she was born and raised in a very creative artistic family.

03:20- Practice of Leadership

  • Fabian has been involved in transformational change, tackling the story of leadership and not criticizing leaders but criticizing the practice of leadership in the current world.
  • According to Fabian, we need to make a shift from the command and control environment toward a more collaborative one
  • Beneath the surface of every issue of the world, lies poor leadership and beneath every great success lies great leadership.
  • Dattner group started focusing on women in leadership roles, when, fifteen years ago, Fabian realized that the reason behind the lack of women in leadership roles lies in the distrust in the minds of people regarding the capability of women.
  • Homeward Bound was birthed in a dream by Fabian in which she went on an expedition with women to Antarctica. It was a film about the practice of leadership seen through the eyes of women, which was later turned into reality and made into a  global initiative to elevate the visibility of women leading with a stem and background in science and technology.

 08:38- Expedition to Antarctica

  • Homewood bound as a name was about appreciating home that you must leave to turn over and look over your shoulder and know there is a place to come back to.
  • Fabian calls Antarctica a whole another planet where everything is different, and it gives the idea of a new beginning and the future.

13:30- Reinvention of Leadership

  • Fabian believes that the current leadership is outdated, and its dying structural hierarchies are going to kill us if we can’t hear the wisdom of the crowds and if as leaders we can’t come into the center and choreograph potential.
  • Sooner or later we will make the shift, and it can be seen globally now in the disconnect between employees and leaders referred to as resignation, we need to recognize this is a time of significant change.

17:27- What does success mean to you

  • For Fabian, success and failures are internal measures and a sense of fulfillment and void.
  • At the intersection of fulfillment and success comes abundance, and one should track for a combination and how they feel about what they do rather than whether someone externally thinks if I’m successful or not.

22:13- Relevance of female leadership in the current system

  • The truth is that there’s no gender in leadership, but when the pendulum has been all the way over towards men, you’ve got to create momentum to get to the middle. So helping women is part of the shift out of an old paradigm to be more inclusive, but the ultimate win is when there is no separation.

24:50- Key Milestones in your life

  • Something that has motivated Fabian all through her life is the words– Mankind does not move forward on the back of sameness, it moves forward on the back of difference keep going stand for something, or you stand for nothing.
  • After Fabian lost her father’s business in the 90s due to the recession, she learned the cost of not standing up for what she wanted and what she believes in.
