Overview

Starting a Business is one of the biggest challenges any entrepreneur will face. There are many questions to answer at the very beginning when starting a business, but the most difficult one is the question of what exactly you want to do. Today we have Sunith Reddy, Co-Founder, Beforest Lifestyle Solutions Pvt Ltd; Farming Collectives to talk about his experience of starting a business.

00:30- About Sunith Reddy

  • Sunith is the Co-Founder of Beforest Lifestyle Solutions Pvt Ltd.
  • As a computer science graduate, I approach concerns in a purely quantitative way and focus a lot on automation and optimization.
  • Currently, I’m working on building India’s first permaculture-based collective farm in multiple destinations in South India.

00:42- About Beforest Lifestyle Solutions

  • Beforest building landscapes to be fully food, water, and power secure, for its inhabitants, its stakeholders which include our flora fauna.
  • This is a different way of life that they’re exposing them to where they are solving a lot of their own issues.
  • We set up these things called collectives where we invite interested participants to come and help us design a landscape where we are setting up our own water sources, our own power resources, we grow our own food.

06:09- What are the next steps?

  • The first step is we just announce an idea that we want to do something, who is interested, and an idea that is a little more concrete.
  • Then we ask people to come forward and actually give us what we call a commitment fee.

08:40- What is so unique about Beforest?

  • The idea behind it is not just about farming, what we realized is we started off like any of the other farming collectives. Just a bunch of people who are looking to grow something.
  • But the moment we started doing natural methods, we realized we’re solving a lot of day-to-day problems also.
  • Here, the starting point was different. It’s an urban audience who’s participating in a farm.

12:03- How do you measure return on investment?

  • We came across a very interesting philosophy that we have adopted now, which is called the four returns framework.
  • It measures financial returns, and returns on investment along financial, social, natural, and inspiration.

17:39- Lessons

  • We often make this mistake when we believe in an idea that we ignore the flags, and I think it’s important for a decision-maker to be a little detached on that front.
  • Having a sense of purpose is the most critical thing.
