[00:40] – About Prof. Jens F Meyer

  • Jens F Meyer is a Professor and Lecturer, a Program Director and a Designer.
  • He is an Adjunct Professor at INSEAD in France.
  • He has been a member of the team that formulated the Blue Ocean Strategy.

[01:07] – What is the core concept of the Blue Ocean Strategy?

  • The key premise of the Blue Ocean Strategy is the idea of moving away from competing in existing market spaces (the “red ocean”).
  • The focus needs to be on creating uncontested market spaces (the “blue ocean”) where competition is irrelevant.
  • The core problem addressed by the Blue Ocean Strategy was the stagnation in growth despite the focus on competitive strategy in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.
  • There was a lack of innovation and renewal, leading to a situation where companies were focused on out-competing each other rather than addressing new and emerging problems.

[10:27] – What role does technology play in developing and implementing a Blue Ocean Strategy?

  • Technology plays a role in enabling companies to reach out to non-customers and explore new market spaces.
  • It can help in gathering data and insights, facilitating exploration, and reducing costs associated with the strategy implementation process.
  • However, technology is not the driver of a Blue Ocean Strategy but rather an enabler.

[22:56] – What are some of the risks associated with the Blue Ocean Strategy? How can these risks be mitigated?

  • One of the risks associated with the Blue Ocean Strategy is the potential for failure of new initiatives.
  • Not every new scenario will succeed, and there is uncertainty in predicting outcomes.
  • Additionally, there may be resistance within the organisation’s culture to embrace new ideas and directions.
