Overview

On today’s episode of The Brand Called You, we have with us an accomplished Entrepreneur Mrs. Shilpa Sharma. Mrs. Sharma is from St. Xaviers Mumbai and an MBA from Mumbai as well. She has worked with Lintas, Cadbury, Mari Co and Fab India.

Mrs. Sharma started out in Advertising but soon realised that it wasn’t her calling. She wanted to be an entrepreneur so she quit and pursued her dream. Coincident, a very exciting opportunity to work with Fab India presented itself and Mrs. Sharma grabbed the opportunity instantly! She worked with Fab India for twelve years and contributed greatly in several fields within the company. 

She then quit to start her own venture, Breakaway. This was an online travel venture that helped people discover various places and have a unique experience, unlike traditional travel agencies. Breakaway stands out as it is a beyond the brochure project and curates unique trips all over the country.

Mrs. Sharma also talked about her second venture Called Jaypore. Which is an e-commerce portal for fashion. It sells apparel, jewellery and accessories crafted by hundreds of local artisans. She prioritised high quality designs and products from all over the country. 

Her domains are diverse and with each venture, Mrs. Sharma has offered uniqueness. Persistent is indeed the word for her.

Profile

Shilpa has spent over two decades in the textile, craft and lifestyle retail space. In 2010, she quit a full time job to live her entrepreneurial dreams and co-founded Jaypore, an online retail portal for exquisite indian handmade and high on design craft products. She has recently handed over the baton to a strategic partner and an able team , while she looks to paint a new canvas of growth

Shilpa is on the board at AIACA and was appointed on a Leadership Group working on Circular Design Challenges by MIT in January 2019

A wealth of experience with the craft sector has enabled many interventions in design at the grassroots level and she participates actively in cluster initiatives committed to women empowerment and livelihood creation opportunities. Her domain expertise finds her empanelled with strategic advisory firms and also actively engaged with the IIM Ahmedabad led CCBP program for young entrepreneurs and the Young India Fellowship (YIF) at Ashoka University ,as a mentor. She continues to engage with various for- and not-for-profit organizations in the craft sector as a pro bono advisor/mentor

Aside from her work with FMCG, Creative and Lifestyle businesses as a consultant, mentor, and advisor, she manages to carve out time to nurture two other ventures, Breakaway (an outcome of her passion for travel, this venture plans and executes bespoke Beyond the Brochure experiential journeys around India) and Mustard, (a delectable blend of a shared love for fine food and exceptional experiences, it offers Bengali and French cuisine and has a presence in Goa and Mumbai) 

Shilpa’s packed professional life does not deter her from maintaining an essential work-life balance. On her time, she is generally found travelling on leisure and pursuing her creative interests while keeping a keen eye out for the next best idea.
