Overview

There have been conflicting opinions on the state of the radio industry in India, with some asserting its thriving nature while others proclaiming its decline. In this episode, we delve into a conversation with a media veteran to explore the challenges faced by the radio industry in India.

[00:32] – About Harrish M Bhatia

  • Harrish is the former president of Sales and Marketing of the Dainik Bhaskar Group, which is a major media company in India.
  • He is an author of two books, “Management and Life Lessons from Ground Zero” and “Jio Dil Se: Live Your Dream.”

[12:06] – What is your logic for your belief to not have a plan B?

  • If you have only one option, then what do you do? You make it happen.
  • You keep on working on your goals despite your challenges. If you have another option, your mind will shift to the second option.
  • It is like going to war, where you do not have the option of changing your battlefield.
  • Plan B makes you weaker to work on plan A.

[17:13] – What are your thoughts if radio is the sunrise industry or sunset industry?

  • There are two things about the radio: it will never become an industry which will not be respected because in India you still have almost 60 to 70% people living in villages.
  • The economic factors force you to get free entertainment.
  • But to make it big, the government needs to really come forward and address some very vital issues.
  • The first is expanding the private radio network to the places where they need to be right now.
  • The second-biggest challenge is music priorities. If you want radio to become a very penetrative medium to the last mile in the rural market, you have to really address some of those issues.
  • In India, the policy for Internet radio is yet not clear, and it will not be clear till the time you solve the issue of music royalty. It is a very heavy cost for which you cannot generate revenues by advertising.
