Overview

There are a lot of problems in the world right now and not all of them can be solved by money. But there are certain problems that have a much better chance of being solved if philanthropic activities became a bit more focused. From poverty to homelessness to hunger, there are problems that are often overlooked. We have Mark with us to talk about the current philanthropic changes happening around the globe.

About Mark Brewer

  • He is the CEO of Central Florida Foundation.
  • He has done journalism from Arizona State University.
  • He worked for 10 years in the profit sector before getting into the nonprofit sector.
  • He is very passionate about philanthropic issues.

05:57- Do you think the situation is becoming better or worse?

  • I think the situation is becoming better in an inequitable fashion and that is the real problem.
  • America is built on a long history of meritocracy and those who don’t rise up either don’t work hard enough or don’t get the right breaks but it’s nobody’s fault.
  • Sometimes it’s difficult to see outside the bubble that you live in. If you live in the wealth bubble then it becomes difficult for you to see the poverty outside that bubble.

12:28- Do you see the next generation being more philanthropic?

  • The next generation tend to be more strategic in their charity. They are more focused on the things they can get their hands around.
  • If you look at the transactional giving, millennials are giving less to the nonprofit sector.
  • But the way they give has changed. They are more likely to donate to the more cause focused charities rather than just giving it to the American Heart Association.

22:06- What has been a failure that changed you?

  • It was the constant battle over the last several years with the issues around homelessness.
  • In a country that is so self sufficient, homelessness is something that should not be a problem.
  • Then I realized the issue that we were dealing with was not a problem, it was a dilemma. I have been trying to make people look at it as something we can solve and not like a shiny object from far away.
