Overview

Supply Chain, has over the period, become an integral part of any business, going beyond just the purchasing of materials. It is critical to pay attention to supply chain systems to plan the backups in times of any disruptions. In today’s episode, we discuss the evolution of supply chain as an integral business unit, along with use of technology and the challenges.

[00:36] – About Dr. Srinivas Talluri

  • Dr. Talluri is the Hoagland Metzler Endowed Professor at the Broad College of Business, Michigan State University.
  • He is a professor of Supply Chain Management.
  • Dr. Talluri is a fellow at the Decision Sciences Institute, and he is an Editor-In-Chief of the Decision Sciences Journal.

[04:16] – How has supply chain evolved?

  • The term, “supply chain,” didn’t exist during my PhD. It was mainly called purchasing.
  • People called it operations management and some people called it logistics.
  • What basically differentiates the supply chain from each of these functional areas is the holistic view of the network all the way from cradle to grave.
  • The supply chain includes the processes from the standpoint of purchasing your components and parts, the production, and distribution of the product to the end customer.
  • Supply chain management is how you manage all these complex sets of activities.
  • That’s how it migrated into viewing the system in a more holistic manner as opposed to focusing on the individual components of the system.

[09:38] -How has technology impacted supply chains in recent years, and what do you see as the future of supply chain technology?

  • The technological investments in supply chains has been tremendous.
  • One solution to address macro-level disruptions and lack of visibility in supply chains is the implementation of supply chain technologies, including the creation of digital twins.
  • A supply chain digital twin is a digital replication of the supply chain and companies can use this technology to basically optimize their supply chain design and planning.
  • You can test the efficacy of a different type of what-if analysis.
  • If a disruption happens at a specific plant, what kind of impact does this have on the supply chain and how does this propagate through the network which will help you in thinking about vulnerable parts within the network?
  • One of the challenges is that technology is just a means to an end, but we need actual people that are trained to be able to manage these technologies and interpret the results that come out of these systems.
