The Yellow Vests Protests or Yellow Jackets Protests or Yellow Vests Revolution are weekly protests in France that began on 17 November 2018. At first, the protestors advocated economic justice; later they called for institutional political reforms. In this episode, we have Rajinder Jhol who talks about Democracy. 11:22- What are the challenges of the Yellow Vest? What does that represent?

  • The Yellow Vest movement in France represents the anger of people.
  • In 2018 France decided to increase the carbon tax on fuel which made it impossible for a lot of French people to get to work. 
  • The French people decided to protest against that decision.
  • There is a lack of social mobility and a loss of trust in the government.

13:40- What was the mandate you gave yourself to write that book?

  • My mandate was to call upon the French people and say, ‘Get your revolution right’. 
  • French are the creators of the modern Republic.
  • The problems that the French have, all republics across the world have.
  • It’s about how citizens engage with the government.

14:55- What was the driving mechanism, to write a book which is quite a big effort?

  • I was deeply emotionally invested in democracy.
  • I had faith in the ability of people to come together and self-organize. 
  • Writing was a way for me to process my emotions.
  • I wanted to show how we could use technology to build a better Republic.

16:26- What was International NGO day about?

  • I invited around 200 different NGOs to the UN to learn more about the SDGs.
  • We talked about working together with businesses and governments using the same language and goals.
  • The event served as an information, education, and collaboration hub.
  • I wanted NGOs to understand how they can work together in times of economic and financial constraints.
