We live in a world today where we cannot imagine not talking to our friends, families, or colleagues over the phone to discuss important matters or frivolous ones. Ten years ago, these services cost a bomb. Tracking back another 10 years, a few privileged had the access to mobility. The telecom industry in India and across the world has come a long way. What seems inevitable to avoid using today, was a luxury till a few years back. In this discussion, we discuss the journey and changes in the Telecom industry in India.

[05:12] – What are some changes that you have seen in the world of telecom over the last two decades?

  • When I started working in telecom in 1995, we were about 950 million people.
  • I put changes in telecom in two contexts: one is what happened globally, and the other is what happened in India.
  • India changed completely with the advent of mobility.
  • There was a very famous book, “Death of Distance” and that is exactly what happened.
  • We saw a shrunk India and hence, an economic boom
  • We have seen enormous changes in regulations.
  • It is amazing to see how inexpensive mobility is in our country.

[12:11] – How will the huge amount of data be used?

  • I read somewhere that technology is moving so fast that we find it difficult to comprehend.
  • But it is also simplifying things.
  • The biggest thing that we will see with a huge amount of data is not just it’s mining, but getting into stronger predictive models.
  • There are patterns that you can pick up. One thing is to react to data, but the other thing is to predict what will happen to look at how data is moving.
  • There is also a lot of garbage, so you need to make sure that you don’t generate more information than is required to be absorbed.
  • Things in the area of weather, climate, and health are the areas where the predictive forms of data will be becoming useful.
