Overview

Fintech is a phrase that first appeared in the 21st century and was used to describe the technology used in the back-end systems of established financial organisations. But since then, the focus has shifted to include services that are more focused on the needs of the user, which has led to a more consumer-focused definition. Nowadays, fintech spans a variety of fields and industries, including investment management, retail banking, fundraising, and education, to mention a few.

In today’s episode of The Brand Called You, Chris Skinner talks about the emerging trends in the financial world with the constant advancement in technology, be it crypto or cloud computing. He also talks about his work as an author of 14 books.

00:33 – About Chris Skinner

  • Chris is a commentator, a CEO of the Finanser and he’s a best selling author.
  • He is known as one of the most influential people in technology.
  • He’s an author of 14 books.
  • He’s also a successful children’s author.

03:28- What is FinTech and why is the sector so hot today?

  • The difference between financial services and technologies is that when they became integrated, it was called fintech.
  • And that was when cloud computing came along.
  • And that around to the mid 2000s, fintechs began to become hot, because they could start with almost zero customers in capital, using cloud computing and smartphone apps, and grow very quickly from bootstrapping into multi million or even billion dollar companies.

08:10- What would you say are some of the latest trends in the global digital economy?

  • The main thing I seem to be talking about all the time right now is the central bank, digital currencies and cryptocurrencies.
  • And the reason is that I think there’s a huge friction and battle between centralised finance versus decentralised finance.
  • And it’s the customer’s choice as to which they believe is the right choice.
  • So we’re going to be using mainly government currencies in day to day transactions, buying and selling goods, that will probably be using decentralised currencies in online and mobile transactions, and for savings and investment.

15:18- What is quantum computing?

  • It’s the next generation of systems.
  • With quantum computing, there is no one or zero.
  • There’s basically a state where the system generates its code and the background in real time in a state that represents what’s happening at that time, in what’s equivalent to what we call today, multi parallel processing, which is where there’s huge numbers of processes, but this time, there’s millions of them.
  • The idea of quantum which is you don’t know whether it’s a one or zero until the code lands.
