[00:40] – About Sunil Malhotra

  • Sunil is the founder and CEO of Ideafarms, design-led strategy consulting and advisory.
  • He is an author of a book titled, “The First Principle.”

[09:48] – What is your approach to design? How are you different from others in India?

  • I believe in providing value rather than focusing on the differentiation.
  • Design education across the world is done upside down because it is basically to subserve the needs of industry.
  • As a result, instead of creating an impact, you end up doing stuff that the client wants for a profit motive.
  • The client brings designers in for a human-centric approach but that comes only after the profit.

[21:10] – How do you manage the balance between creativity and practicality while building solutions for clients?

  • Most people don’t look at things at a systemic or a holistic level.
  • As a result, everyone defines “design” differently.
  • Design thinking is not designed.
  • It’s the way you can think like a designer for solving a business problem.
  • Earlier, there were two lenses to look at things: feasibility lenses (can it be made) and viability lenses (can it make money).
  • Nobody taught you that there is a customer at the other end.
  • You never know till you put something out into the market whether that was something that anybody wanted.
  • However, with technology and data today, you can align the two lenses with your design.
