Overview

At a basic level, financial independence makes women feel more secure and respected irrespective of their socio-economic background. This automatically has a relay effect not just on women but their families, society, and the country at large. More financially independent women mean a more progressive society that is healthier, safer, and less biased.

In today’s episode of The Brand Called You, Madhura DasGupta Sinha talks about how important it is to empower women financially. She also talks about her work at Aspire For Her and what the organisation is doing to help women get empowered financially.

[00:22] – About Madhura DasGupta Sinha

  • Madhura is the founder and chief executive officer of Aspire For Her.
  • She has been a banker for 25 years with IDFC, Standard Chartered and ANZ, Grindlays Bank.
  • She was awarded the British evening Achievement Scholarship in 2003. And she’s on a mission to change the diversity equation of our country.

03:03- Why is Gender inequality and women empowerment a challenge all over the world?

  • It was a strange situation when we launched Aspire For Her on Women’s Day 2020.
  • You know, I started off trying to solve the India problem. But what happened immediately after Women’s Day 2020 brought the  world to its knees.
  • We started talking about Aspire For Her primarily on social media, because that’s the only thing that we could do.
  • We realized that people from across the world were resonating with the cause, you know, they were just signing up.
  • We did not really request them to come and be part of the movement, but they wanted to be part of the movement and women from 60 different countries today are part of it.
  • And we do realize that this is not an India problem. It is a global problem, because women across the globe feel that their voices are not heard.
  • Maybe the quantum is different, the sort of level of inequality is not equal. But there is this feeling of lack of agency, this feeling of exclusion, which is very much there across I think all countries to a certain extent.

15:55- What would you say are the reasons for inequality?

  • The basic root cause is mindset, whether it is the woman herself, or whether it is people around her.
  • We’ve seen so many women trapped in abusive relationships trapped in bad marriages, because they are not financially independent.
  • And of course, add to that the COVID related or any tragedy that happens, then befalls the family, in spite of being educated, they are not able to really become economically meaningful to their family unit.

20:14- What lessons would you want our viewers and listeners to take away from your own journey?

  • I’d actually just like to leave them with three words- Aspire For Her!
  • This is a trillion dollar potential for our country. And by ensuring that we get more women into the economy, you get more women with economic agency.
  • It’s not just going to be a great time for women, it’s going to be a great time for men as well. Perfect. And that’s why I’d like to tell them three words-  Aspire For Her.
