[00:10] – About Melissa Bernstein

  • Melissa is the Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Lifelines LLC, a wellness company.
  • She is also a Co-Founder of Melissa & Doug Toys.

[10:30] – What inspired you to start a toy company?

  • We wanted to create something that could touch people’s lives and withstand economic fluctuations.
  • We focused on children’s products because of our love for education and learning, which we saw as a resilient industry.
  • We also noticed a gap in the market for classic wooden toys, which became the foundation of our toy company.

[23:26] – What led you to consider selling the company?

  • After 20 years of owning 100% of the company, we started feeling risk-averse as the company grew, with hundreds of employees and increasing responsibilities.
  • We became concerned about future uncertainties, which made us act smaller and lose the entrepreneurial spirit that had fueled the growth.
  • This shift in mindset, combined with a desire to breathe easier and regain our passion, led us to consider taking on investors and ultimately selling the company.

[31:30] – What role do sensory immersion and grounding play in Lifelines’ well-being approach?

  • Sensory immersion and grounding are central to Lifelines’ approach to well-being.
  • There is a power in engaging the senses to interrupt the sympathetic nervous system and activate the parasympathetic system.
  • Products like grounding stones, which involve touch and scent, help users come back to the present moment, offering a practical and effective method to reduce stress.

[53:03] – What are your recommendations for the audience?

  • Follow your curiosity and explore diverse life experiences.
  • Dedicate time each week to learn something new that fascinates you, as gathering diverse experiences is key to becoming an innovative thinker.
