Overview

The debate between degree and skills when it comes to job recruiting is a topic of ongoing discussion and varies depending on the industry, job role, and specific requirements of each organization. He shares how people with learnability, if trained well, can advance in careers in which they do not have formal degree education.

[00:12] – About Srikantan (Tan) Moorthy

  • Mr. Tan Moorthy is the former Executive Vice President of Infosys, an Indian Multinational IT Company.
  • Currently, he is involved in myriad workforce transformation and sustainable development projects.
  • Tan has held several key roles including being the Head of Delivery Operations for US, Canada, and LATAM, Group Head of HR, Global Head of Education, Chairman of the Board for Infosys Public Services and Trustee on the Board of Infosys Foundation USA.

[07:51] – What was the first major business role that you were asked to take on when you joined Infosys?

  • It was as a delivery manager.
  • The role involves working with teams across geographies, both India and in the US and clients who were not in India.
  • I was fortunate to experience managing teams remotely at the time when remote working was not widely known.
  • I went to head service delivery for a telecom business, and then run the entire application development and maintenance service land, which is the largest service line franchise.

[13:37] – Can you elaborate on the size of the education program?

  • The large numbers are a reflection of how Infosys has always believed in competency development as a core differentiator.
  • Owing to the number of campus recruits that Infosys was doing at that time, we trained around 20,000 people a year.
  • The training we put in place happened over 1.4 million square feet of education space, where we could train 14,000 people on a single day.
  • It is the world’s largest residential campus to provide high class facilities to people for training.
