Overview

India has been widely known for providing services in the IT sector. But the emerging trend has seen Indian companies building software products for the global market. In today’s episode, we discuss the reasons for this trend.

[00:34] – About Milind Katti

  • Milind is the co-founder of and Chief Operating Officer of DemandFarm, a software product company.
  • Before becoming an entrepreneur, Milind started his career with Tata Motors.
  • DemandFarm builds account planning software for B2B companies.

[07:29] – How have Indian tech companies helped in putting India on the global map? What can be done to enhance it and keep the reputation going?

  • With bots doing multiple things, we need to change our education system. For instance, today we don’t need four years of engineering degree to become a computer programmer. It can be done in 6 to 12 months. Those kinds of changes have to happen.
  • We also need to change our attitude from somebody who will answer if asked a question. Today, the answers are already available on the internet. Skill is about asking the right question and not just answering.
  • We are slowly moving from a services company toa product company. It cannot be the case only in IT. We have to do it in pharma, manufacturing and a lot of other fields.

[10:00] – How do the big companies become nimble enough to be able to handle the speed at which startups move?

  • If they try to become a startup, it is not going to work. They need to continue to maintain their DNA and their strength.
  • Large companies have started creating small innovative products as part of the bundling solution that they have.
  • A lot of the large organizations take up this massive exercise of digital transformation of sales in a global company. When they take up this large exercise, they will put my product as part of the solution.
  • If they start innovating in building these small products, they won’t win. That is how they have started collaborating by merging their strength with product companies.

[15:25] – Why do startups fail?

  • Startups fail when they do not validate that the solution that they are offering is needed by the masses or not. And even if it is needed, is someone willing to pay for it?
  • People do not want to pay for solving all problems.
  • Another reason for failure is messing with the execution part.
