[00:16] – About Ali Khademhosseini
- Ali is the Founding Director and CEO of Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovations.
- He is a former Professor and Researcher at Harvard and MIT.
- Ali has published over 700 articles and holds over 50 patents and patent applications.
- He has been recognised and felicitated several times.
[04:05] – What notable technology was presented at the Innovation Summit?
- A notable technology presented was a contact lens capable of detecting biomarkers from tears in a non-invasive manner.
- This technology can monitor mental health indicators, such as anxiety and happiness, in real-time and communicate this data to electronic devices.
[26:10] – Please talk about your venture, “Omeat”.
- Omeat is a cultivated meat company.
- It is like growing cells from livestock in a bioreactor.
- It has faced challenges in the current venture capital market but is nearing the completion of its Series B financing.
- The company is close to getting regulatory approval from the FDA and aims to provide an alternative way of producing meat that addresses food safety, security, and environmental challenges.
- We believe that cultivated meat, like many other technological advancements, will initially face resistance but will eventually become widely accepted.
[34:04] – Please talk about your work on bioprinting.
- The Terasaki Institute is pioneering new ways to address organ shortage and failure by integrating technologies such as induced pluripotent stem cells and 3D printing to create tissue structures and functionalities.
- The aim is to develop processes for printing cells and materials in an organised way to recreate tissue structure.
- The institute is exploring the use of induced pluripotent stem cells to create personalised cells, and 3D printing technologies to organise and print different cell types and materials to recreate tissue structure.
- We are also working on new types of printers and materials to enhance this process.
[59:13] – What advice do you have for young researchers and innovators?
- Find your passion, seek great mentors, and maintain perseverance and grit.
- Learn to not give up and remain passionate about your work.
