The pandemic has shown, how volatile and ever-changing the world is. [03:54] – What are the characteristics of the age of uncertainty?

  • We should term it, “the age of opportunity” because there is a lot of change that is unfamiliar to us but within that is the opportunity to do more, to go further, to build our career, and to build our businesses.
  • The events that we saw in much of the 21st century so far like 9/11 or the Great Recession, the financial crisis, Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were seen as events of turbulence or volatility but against a backdrop of stable predictable orderly progress.
  • 9/11 was a huge shock but by and large, the world was stable, orderly, and predictable. Post-COVID, I think there is no stable, orderly backdrop anymore, and it is a world of constant or kind of volatility.
  • The certainties of the past have gone, and that’s why it is really the age of uncertainty.

11:17 – What are some of the most significant ideas that have affected the world of work and continue to shape our present and future?

  • I think I can pick out some trends because it’s the trends in the world of work that are fascinating, and then the ideas illustrate those trends.
  • One of them is the rise of data and assessment, that’s needed by psychology and technology.
  • In the late 40s or the 1950s, we saw the Myers-Briggs type indicator that’s since been followed by a whole range of brilliant assessments.
  • The rise of assessment has shown who we are as leaders, and how we behave, and I think that was an early major shift that happened leaders need to be self-aware.
  • We need to understand ourselves, our strengths, and our areas for development and I think assessment really helped.
  • It does say something about the rise of psychology; about the need to connect with people, the need to have empathy, and the need to give people a purpose to look for that opportunity.
