Overview

In this episode of the Brand Called You, Claus Raasted, a consultant and keynote speaker, discusses lessons from live-action role-playing (LARPing) and how that background translates into expertise in innovating organizational culture. He touches on his LARPing business that eventually failed, leading to significant personal debt. From those experiences, he shares insights on turning failure into fuel, revealing your true self through experimenting with identity, connecting disparate worlds to spark creativity, the power of childlike curiosity and play, and more.

00:32- About Claus Raasted

  • He is also the Chief Learning Officer at Academics Academy.
  • He is a keynote speaker and has authored 45 books.

09:01- What is the objective of the Roleplaying Factory?

  • Roleplay is pretend play for kids, but more organized – bigger events, better costumes and stories. I had a passion and career in live-action roleplaying for years.
  • In 2019 the company I spent 15 years building, the world’s largest live-action roleplay studio, came crashing down. Left me with a personal debt of nearly 1 million euros.
  • Roleplay remains a passion I’ll advocate for, but after the crash, it’s no longer my profession. I had built an identity around it, but the last 5 years it has meant something different.

32:12- What advice would you give young people out there listening to this?

  • Be 120% yourself – it makes you harder to copy and is less exhausting than pretending to be someone else all the time.
  • Doing this draws people to you who find you interesting, while also pushing away those that don’t move quickly instead of getting stuck in maybes. The problem in business is not a no, it’s a maybe.
  • When you are an over-the-top version of yourself, it becomes easier for people to say yes I want that or No I don’t. As long as there are enough people who want what you have to offer, those that don’t are fine.
