00:35- About Raj Yavatkar

  • Raj Yavatkar is the Chief Technology Officer of Juniper Networks.
  • He is a board member and advisor to startups and an angel investor.
  • He has earlier worked with Google and Intel.

10:38- How do you envision the future of networking technology in the context of the Internet of Things and smart devices?

  • With billions of Internet of Things and smart devices already online at home, there is a need for edge clouds or infrastructure closer to the IoT devices, like smart cities and airports happening in India.
  • The future is the network moving from centralized infrastructure to more decentralized distributed infrastructure.
  • With machine learning, there is a need to do inferencing across devices at the edge of the cloud, leading to thousands and tens of thousands of edge clouds and more decentralized infrastructure.

20:21- What would you say are three lessons you would give to young engineers and aspiring individuals?

  • The number one is constant learning – every three or four years, you have to be ready to move into an adjacent area from where you are and learn new technologies.
  • Focusing on what I call stakeholder management, learning the stakeholders around you and why they are needed for your success.
  • The third one is to be extremely focused on collaboration and teamwork – very few people succeed on their own, a lot of success comes from serendipity which happens because you work with others who inject new ideas you did not think about.
