[02:52] – How would you define emotional health? What are some common misconceptions people have about emotional health?

  • Emotional health is the fulfilment of seven enduring emotional needs that exist throughout a person’s life.
  • These needs include a sense of belonging, a sense of being complete, a sense of being boundless, a sense of mattering, a sense of making a meaningful contribution, a sense of having one’s voice, and a sense of having a purpose.
  • The common misconception is that emotional health is solely linked to happiness.
  • But it goes beyond happiness and is about the fulfilment of these core emotional needs.

[11:48] – How do cultural differences affect emotional expression and understanding?

  • Different cultures have norms and expectations regarding emotional expression and understanding.
  • These cultural norms dictate how people should behave, express their emotions, and interact with others.
  • For example, in some cultures, there may be a stigma against showing vulnerability or emotions, while in others, emotional expression may be encouraged.
  • It is important to recognize that emotional health is not purely a cultural construct but is rooted in how the body responds to emotional needs.

[16:42] – How have advances in neurosciences and the availability of technology deepened our understanding of emotions and emotional health?

  • Advances in neuroscience have revealed that emotions are not solely brain-based but are experienced through the entire body.
  • Our nervous system, which connects the brain to the body, plays a crucial role in emotional health.
  • Technology can also help individuals connect with their emotional experiences, as tools like meditation and mindfulness apps can guide individuals to better understand their emotions and needs.
