Overview

Urban farming has been around for decades. Now, it’s becoming more popular as people are realizing the need to reduce food miles and the environmental impact of raising animals, and the use of fertilizers and pesticides. While it sounds great in theory, the reality of farming in urban areas is not as easy.

As this episode will show, you will find there are a number of challenges faced by urban farmers.

Vincent Wei, Co-Founder, Archisen, Singapore-based Agritech Co, focussed on Urban Farming, talks to us about urban farming in depth.

[01:02] What is urban farming, and what are the different forms of urban farming?

Urban Farming refers to farming in urban areas, such as cities or urbanized areas.

In these locations, there is usually a higher cost of land and labor and hence there is a need to have better utilization of space.

Types of growing systems:

  • Soil-Based System
  • Hydroponic System

[03:22] How are you changing the economics in much smaller format farms?

It is certainly a problem when you have many middlemen in between, especially when there are parties involved in transport and storage which further leads to food spoilage. With urban farming, you could be located in the middle of a city, or you could be located on top of a restaurant and the consumers who want to purchase the vegetables can get them.

[07:23] About Cropdom, Just Produce, and Just Harvest

A TURN-KEY URBAN FARM SOLUTION – CROPDOM

Cropdom is a short form for the Crop Kingdom. Utilizing cutting-edge IoT technology and data analytics, Cropdom has redefined the traditional physical barriers of farming. Powered by Archisen’s proprietary software, Croptron, it consists of many innovative functions such as farm design, market analysis, crop selection, sale of produce, and financial modeling to optimize the usage of precious resources.

With the integration of Cropdom, Archisen has been able to retain a strong focus on sustainability, and their closed-loop farming system is estimated to use a remarkable 90% less water compared to traditional farming methods.

UNIQUE FARM-TO-TABLE SOLUTION – JUST HARVEST

Not to be confined to industrial spaces, Archisen has developed Just Harvest, which provides retail storefronts with the freshest, house-grown plants. By installing vertical towers on their premises, Archisen enables restaurants, cafés, and hotels to harvest the vegetables fresh and serve them to their customers, all within the day. With Just Harvest, Archisen has demonstrated how technological innovations can provide an ease of convenience and higher yield to businesses in urban farming.

NUTRITIOUS, FLAVORFUL PRODUCE FOR ALL – JUST PRODUCE

Archisen’s flagship brand, Just Produce, carries a variety of salads and specialty herbs, free of chemical pesticides or GMOs. Using Controlled-Environment Agriculture (CEA), every aspect of the climate can be controlled and monitored – including temperature, humidity, light intensity, and air composition. This enabled Archisen to configure environments that organically enhance the natural, rich flavors of each plant while retaining its nutritional value.

[09:54] Challenges of Urban Farming

  • The lack of highly skilled labors
  • Energy Costs

[16:12] How do small urban farms handle pests?

Unlike outdoor farms, the growing environment is enclosed in an indoor farm and is separate from the open air, so it is much harder for the pests to intrude.

[20:52] Three key lessons

  • Importance of building a great team
  • Importance of being honest, trustworthy, and ethical
  • Importance of just doing it
