00:41- Three inflection points that made you this wonderful individual

  • I started through college and in a management information systems career, and had a passion for building systems and for improving the lives of people, but also processes and companies and making them more efficient.
  • I was at Accenture for 25 years, and went through the process of becoming a senior managing director there and eventually running the Oracle practice for our products industry.
  • I got exposed to different types of companies, corporations, technologies, both in the ERP space and the technology space.
  • And each of board work I do, I tend to have a technical span or a technical support role.

02:12- Work as an Analyst with the American Management Systems.

  • I learned really in the early days of building systems from the ground up from doing requirements analysis, to doing business analysis.
  • And then from there, rose in the ranks within AMS, became a manager and ran small teams and projects, and then got involved in working in our government sector.
  • I spent most of my career on the East Coast and eventually migrated myself out towards the west coast about 25 years ago.

09:38- What do you need to succeed like you have at Accenture?

  • The biggest thing is that Accenture doesn’t just hire systems people.
  • We’ll hire philosophy majors, psychology majors. When you’re going to interview processes, you have to have the ability to have critical thinking.
  • Accenture teaches you a lot about building systems, about doing requirements analysis, doing development. Our classes are phenomenal.
  • It’s critical thinking skills and the ability to take like a complex problem, and have the ability to break it down into its parts, and then figure out how to put it back together. Those are the big things.

15:25-  You’re responsible for the turnaround of Accenture’s Oracle implementation for Salesforce. So what does that mean?

  • One of my niches in the firm was coming in and doing turnarounds on projects that are going south.
  • I was brought in to be the client CIO. So that was a very different role. We had challenges with our delivery team there.
  • And then we need a different leadership on the client side to help drive the Accenture team to finish the work.
  • I spent a lot of time there, both counseling the client, but also counseling our Accenture team members on how to improve.

33:17- What are some of the things that you want to achieve now at this stage in your career?

  • Continuing my board work. I feel enriched for them doing that. But then more recently, I’ve gotten involved in this angel investing side of the business.
  • I’ve been involved on due diligence teams and analyzing companies and figuring out what makes sense. So I think I could do that for private equity.
