Overview

There are numerous degrees and courses we take to constantly upgrade our hard skillet in order to accomplish our goals and strive for career success. What we often tend to ignore is the importance of soft skills which need to be learned, practiced, and cultivated. In today’s episode, we discuss the importance and power of empathy and how it can lead to better workplace results.

[00:33] – About Ajit Dodani

  •  Ajit is the founder of EmpathifyU and is an empathy strategist.
  • Ajit has extensively worked in handling the finances of top organizations.

[04:58] – How do you define empathy?

  •  There are different types of empathy. We know emotional empathy, cognitive empathy, and compassion empathy.
  • Our work is highly focused on compassion empathy.
  • We use a definition by Morgan Nichols: “Let me hold the door for you. I may have never walked in your shoes, but I can see your soles are worn, and your strength is stone under the weight of a story I have never lived before. Let me hold the door for you. After all, you’ve been through, it’s the least I can do.”
  • Empathy requires us to be present, observe and take action.

[08:13] – How does one create empathy in an increasingly divided world?

  • Empathy is about understanding and listening. The first skill I would teach somebody is the power of presence.
  • Today, we are over-activated, we’re not present. So we are seeing a perforated world issue. People are sitting in meetings with their heads in seven different places, not paying attention to the presenter or the problem at hand.
  • And they’re listening to every third thing. 60% of people are living that way. That means we’re losing people. So the first trait I teach the world, and it shows up every week on my LinkedIn, is telling everybody to take a breath with me.
  • The second thing is, I would do a deep dive into empathetic listening. The final level is conscious listening.
