Overview

The concept of networking has always gained traction, and it has increased all the more with social media. However, we often tend to miss the real meaning of networking in the constant race of meeting new people. It is good, but what is better is to be able to create connections with the people in your network. Today, we discuss the difference between connecting vs. networking. We also delve into how can one cultivate meaningful connections.

[00:39] – About Lou Diamond

  • Lou is the Chief Executive Officer of Thrive LouD, an organization helping people and companies to explode their sales, retain their clients and build a thriving culture through the power of connecting.
  • He is a professional speaker, sales and leadership consultant, and an award-winning podcaster.
  • Lou is also the author of two books: “Master The Art of Connecting” and “Speak Easy”.

[06:01] – What would you say is the difference between networking and connecting?

  •  I do not necessarily believe in networking as much as I believe in connecting.
  • We need to have people in our network that we are associated with and connect with, but the reality is we are trying to make stronger connections with those within our network and that means we need to have good conversations.
  • One could argue you may have a gazillion people in your network but if you only had a select few that you had really strong connections with that could actually be even more powerful.
  • My big focus is to establish strong connections within your network.

[07:10] – At what stage does one start to build connections, and how can one connect better?

  • Every single connection begins with a great conversation.
  • It’s important to ask great questions, learn from others, make friends, be curious, and be grateful anytime you have the opportunity to even have a conversation from a young age.
  • When the pandemic hit, the world was very concerned about young people losing certain social skills because they were being isolated at a very important age.
  • The more you grow, the more you develop and the more you learn, the more you connect.

[13:33] – Give me your perspective on the understanding of the word leader or leadership.

  • Leadership is connecting within your organization and your people and those that are associated with your brand.
  • The skills of connecting are the same across the board.
  • You need to be asking your people great questions, you need to be in a mindset that’s open and willing and grateful that people are working with you, for you in your organization.
  • You also need to be fearless, which is what a lot of salespeople and a lot of leaders need to be.
  • Furthermore, you have to take the risks and be authentic.
