This period showcased, yet again, the importance of the role of the Human Resources Department in ensuring that employees deliver the work while also staying motivated and content. In this episode, with the esteemed figure in academia, professor TV Rao, we discuss the importance of the role of HR in business success.

[00:40] – About Prof. TV Rao

  • Professor Rao is the Chairman of TVRLS and the former Professor of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
  • He has been credited to have conceptualized and initiated the concept of human resources development.
  • Professor Rao has authored and co-authored over 60 books.

[03:26] – What got you interested in human resources?

  • It is an outcome of a counseling project where they wanted us to examine their performance of the apparel system.
  • We interviewed many employees, particularly the managers who gave us the most important question of how much time employees spend for the organization identity and some of them counted it’s almost 70% of their waking life.
  • They asked that if we spend 70% of our waking life, what is this organization doing to make us enjoy the work we do?
  • The Personnel Department was not ready to make sure that people enjoyed their work. That is when we created a new system called the human resource development system.

[05:10] – When did the HR department evolve to become a key part of the C-Suite as a CHRO?

  • If HRD has to make an impact, it has to be given the top level position.
  • At the time, our recommendation was that it should be a part of the board.
  • Conceptually, if HRD has to at the time stand on its own, it needs to work with the personnel who deal with the recruitment, who deal with a lot of other kinds of things.
  • We conceptualized HRD as an integrated part of personnel. To be fair, it was the first time we recommended that this should be at the highest level.
  • By the late 80s, many organizations started giving them the position.
