Overview

Modern sport was codified in England in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Western Boxing, Pugilism See note. Boxing is a combat sport in which two people, usually wearing protective gloves and other protective equipment such as hand wraps and mouth guards, throw punches at each other for a predetermined amount of time in a boxing ring.

01:56- Did you decide you were fascinated by boxing in high school or college?

  • I was always a big sports fan but not necessarily a boxing fan.
  • The reason I got into Boxing journalism is that I got a job.  And 44 years later, I am still doing it.
  • I had no intention of getting involved in boxing.
  • I loved sports and from the very beginning, what made boxing so interesting to me, and it remains as such to this day, is how interesting the athletes are.

07:36- How did your parents feel about boxing?

  • Writing about it and broadcasting about it is safer than doing it. They had no problem with my job.
  • The boxing business has been pretty dirty. To be in the media frees me from the financial risks and getting physically hurt. 
  • It is really the best of both worlds because I am a part of sports without committing myself.

11:22- You have been called the Best Boxing Historian

  • I am not even close to being that. The history of the sport is so deep and rich.
  • I am 65 and I learn every day. I never stop learning.
  • Boxing mirrors society so much. History is filled with fascinating people.
