Overview

Raj Bandyopadhyay is the owner and photographer of Series A Photography. He started his career as a computer science graduate and went on to earn a Ph.D. in computer science from Rice University. He worked as a software engineer and then later as a Chief Data Scientist at a couple of startups. In his mid-30s, he had a re-evaluation and decided to pursue photography, which brought him joy and fulfillment. He was inspired by his partner’s female-to-male gender transition and realized the importance of finding what feels true to oneself. Today, his focus is on personal branding photography, working with entrepreneurs, and helping them build a genuine connection with their brands.

00:37- About Raj Bandyopadhyay

  • Raj Bandyopadhyay is the Owner / Photographer of Series A Photography.
  • Earlier, he was a data scientist and a software engineer.
  • He is a B. Tech in Computer Science from IIT Bombay, and a Ph.D. from Rice University.

01:02- Journey from a computer science graduate to the world of photography

  • I grew up in Mumbai. From a young age, I was a “Smart Kid”. My parents told me to either go to IIT or become a doctor.
  • In 1996, the industry was beginning to grow so did my graduation and went to the US for my Ph.D. and worked in a few startups.
  • In 2012-2013, when machine learning was catching up, I got interested in that field and switched to Data Science.
  • But in my 30s, I realized that was not fulfilling for me and wanted to do something different.

03:54- Inspired by my partner’s female-to-male gender transition

  • We’d been married for about eight to nine years and my partner came out as transgender.
  • When we got married we looked like a typical heterosexual couple.
  • Then my partner came out and said I’m actually a man and started the process of gender transition which means hormones and surgery.
  • After this transition, things started getting and going in a positive direction for him. He finally felt like he was in his true identity which was a huge thing for me.
  • it made me ask what change I need to make to feel true to myself.

08:50- About the mood board

  • It is similar to what people call a vision board or an inspiration board.
  • It is a tool where you collect a set of images in one place and there are two purposes for that:
  • The first purpose is Expression:  As a photographer, I need to know what your expression of your values is
  • The second purpose is Discovery: the moon board is a way for you to discover new things about yourself in a very intuitive visual way.

22:11- Three lessons

  • You cannot hide in your personal brand. If you’re creating a personal brand, you need to put yourself out there you can’t hide your story or your personality.
  • A personal brand is not about being perfect. It is about building a connection with your audience. Let go of perfectionism.
  • My favorite photography posing tip which is to breathe. When there is a camera in front of our faces we often stop breathing and that often gives us that posed awkward look.
